GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS

Free City seeks to foster a critical and creative dialogue on current topics of interest in the world of urbanism. Although we accept written submission and will feature both short and long writing pieces in each issue, we highly encourage the submission of more creative, imaginative and artistic pieces. Free City is a bilingual publication; submissions may be in either French or English. As this is a Montréal-based zine, we will have at least one feature on Montréal in each issue and strongly support submissions focused on local content. The zine will be published online and in print on a biannual basis in September and March.

PUBLICATION DIMENSIONS

The printed zine is 5.5” x 8.5” in dimensions (half letter). Please ensure graphics are sized accordingly and legible for printing.

*We will publish a maximum of two long written pieces per issue. We may request some long written pieces be condensed and published as short written pieces.

ARTWORK/SHORT GRAPHIC NOVELS OR COMIC STRIPS
All artwork submitted must be original work. Please carefully read through our statement/policy on plagiarism below. Artwork can include designs, plans, drawings, paintings, prints, collages, or any other work you’re interested in submitting. There is no word or page limit, however length must be reasonable. Please refer to publication dimensions for sizing graphics. Accepted formats include: PDF, jpeg, png. Minimum resolution: 300 dpi

PHOTO JOURNALS OR PHOTO ESSAYS
All photos submitted must be original work or appropriate credit given to photographer. Please carefully read through our statement/policy on plagiarism below. There is no word or page limit, however length must be reasonable. Please refer to publication dimensions for sizing graphics Accepted formats include: PDF, jpeg, png. Minimum resolution: 300 dpi

POETRY
All poetry submitted must be original work. Poetry may be accompanied with other visual mediums such as sketches, painting, photographs etc. There is no specific word count limit for poetry submissions; however submissions must be a maximum of 2 pages. Please refer to publication dimensions for sizing graphics Accepted formats include: PDF, jpeg, png. Minimum resolution: 300 dpi

CROSSWORDS
All crosswords submitted must be original work. We will accept a maximum of one crossword per issue. There is no specific word count limit for crossword submissions; however submissions must be a maximum of 1 page. Crossword graphic can be computer generated or hand drawn. Please refer to publication dimensions for sizing graphics Accepted formats include: PDF, jpeg, png. Minimum resolution: 300 dpi

ORIGINAL INTERVIEWS
All interview pieces submitted must be original interviews conducted by the author and appropriate credit must be given for all work and ideas that are not the authors own. Please carefully read through our statement/policy on plagiarism below. Proof of permission to publish the interview must be granted by the interviewee and accompagny the submission. Submissions must be a maximum of 750-1000 words, not including permission to publish the interview. Document must include line numbers to facilitate an easy review. All acronyms must be defined on first use. British or American English spelling is accepted; however, it must be consistent. APA formatting must be used for in text citations and final references lists. Please limit use of discipline specific jargon or technical terms, we are not an academic publication. If technical terms are used, please briefly explain the term in text or with a footnote. Please refer to publication dimensions for sizing graphics Accepted formats include: Please submit both a word.docx and a PDF. Any images included must be minimum 300 dpi

SHORT WRITTEN PIECES
All written pieces submitted must be original work and appropriate credit must be given for all work and ideas that are not the authors own. Please carefully read through our statement/policy on plagiarism below. Accepted short written pieces may include, but are not limited to commentaries, book or film reviews, op-eds, and short stories. Writing may be accompanied with other visual mediums such as sketches, painting, photographs etc. Submissions must be a maximum of 500-750 words. Document must include line numbers to facilitate an easy review. All acronyms must be defined on first use. British or American English spelling is accepted; however, it must be consistent. LONG WRITTEN PIECES* (FEATURED ESSAY)
All written pieces submitted must be original work and appropriate credit must be given for all work and ideas that are not the authors own. Please carefully read through our statement/policy on plagiarism below. Plagiarism is not tolerated. Accepted short written pieces may include, but are not limited to interviews, critical reviews, long-form journalism, opinion pieces. Writing may be accompanied with other visual mediums such as sketches, painting, photographs etc. Submissions must be a maximum of 1200 words. Document must include line numbers to facilitate an easy review process. All acronyms must be defined on first use. British or American English spelling is accepted; however, it must be consistent. APA formatting must be used for in text citations and final references lists. Please limit use of discipline specific jargon or technical terms, we are not an academic publication. ARTWORK
Please ensure submission is original work and give appropriate credit if writing or images from other sources are included in your poetry. Provide necessary information to ensure these sources can be located.

INTERVIEWS
Please provide either the contact information of your interviewee, or confirmation that the interviewee consents to the release of content.

PHOTOS
Should you wish to submit photos, or include photos to accompany your contributions, please give appropriate credit to the photographer if photos are not your own.

POETRY
Please ensure submission is original work and give appropriate credit if writing or images from other sources are included in your poetry. Provide necessary information to ensure these sources can be located.

CROSSWORDS
Please ensure content in crossword submission is original work. If it not, please give appropriate credit if crossword or images from other sources are used in your crossword. Please, provide necessary information to ensure these sources can be located. If the crossword image was generated using a crossword generating program/website, please credit the source.

STATEMENT AND POLICY ON PLAGIARISM
All submissions must be original work. Please give appropriate credit when credit is due- when work and ideas are not your own. Also, please provide references and/or links whenever appropriate. If you are unsure, please give credit to the original course. Plagiarism is not cool and will result in rejection of submissions. Our Free City editors will be reviewing and cross-checking facts and references. SUBMISSION PROCESS
Submissions are accepted between the call for submission and the submission deadline for each issue. The deadline for Spring 2019’s Hidden City issue is December 15, 2018.

All submissions should be entered through the Google Form on our Submissions page. If you have any questions on acceptable forms of submission or on the topic of fake, please email info@free-city.ca.

Upon receipt of the submission, you will receive email confirmation and further instructions on the reviewing process. We aim to review submissions on a first-come, first-serve basis as they are received; however, it may take up a month for us to review your submission and notify you of any required changes and acceptance or rejection status.
