Closely examining the surfaces of human settlement reveals a rich picture of the depth of urban relationships, flows, and meanings.
In this emergence of intersecting ideas, dovetailing dynamics, and fracturing forces, a splintered environment is rendered intelligible. This year, Free City invites you to excavate the theme of “Emergence.”
What do you perceive as budding, burgeoning, and emerging?
In the constant shuffle of cities, it's natural to focus on the present, on one unit, on one process. But zoom out, fast-forward. What else do you see?
Embedded within the shifting patterns of human and natural landscape are relationships, flows, and meanings that both enrich and complicate our lived experience. Through intricately layered processes, these aspects emerge singularly or simultaneously, raising questions and highlighting tensions. It is in this emergence of intersecting ideas, of dovetailed dynamics, and fractured forces that a splintered environment is rendered intelligible.
Emergence can have clarity, but it can also be nebulous.
Perhaps it can be mapped, spatially or not, with detail. Perhaps it cannot be mapped at all. Yet, when we closely examine the surfaces and sub-surfaces of human settlement, a rich picture of the depth of human experience, perceptions, and contradictions is unearthed.
